American Lawyer's A-List 2010

Arnold & Porter is ranked on American Lawyer's "A-List" 2010, the magazine's annual ranking of the top 20 US firms. The magazine considers the list "a ranking of the nation's elite law firms." It is the seventh time the firm has made the list since its inception in 2003. The "A-List" is based on revenue per lawyer, commitment to pro bono, diversity among lawyers, and associate satisfaction. Arnold & Porter is the pro bono category winner on the "A-List" with a near-perfect score of 199 out of 200.


Ian Dodds-Smith Named "Global Life Sciences Lawyer of the Year" 2010 in the Who's Who Legal Awards

The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers 2010 named Ian Dodds-Smith "Global Life Sciences Lawyer of the Year" for the second consecutive year in its Who's Who Legal Awards. Editor-in-Chief Callum Campbell said, "In a highly competitive field, retaining the Who's Who Legal Life Sciences Lawyer of the Year Award is an outstanding achievement. Ian Dodds-Smith received more votes from clients and peers worldwide than any other lawyer in our research. He also noted: "...the consistently positive feedback we received from our sources across the globe reflect his exceptional talent and pre-eminence in the field."


The National Law Journal list of "Washington's Most Influential Women Lawyers" 2010

The National Law Journal named Arnold & Porter antitrust partner Deborah Feinstein one of "Washington's Most Influential Women Lawyers" in its June 28, 2010 issue. NLJ editors selected 33 "power players" for "work that places them in an elite tier." NLJ said, "We are recognizing their work, their influence and the fact that they may have had to work a bit harder than many of their male colleagues to get where they are today." Ms. Feinstein was singled out for her track record of winning antitrust approval of megadeals, including recently winning FTC approval for Pepsi's $7.8 billion acquisition of two bottlers.


Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business 2010

Arnold & Porter garnered national recognition in 15 practice areas in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business 2010, and was named a leading law firm in a comprehensive range of practice areas in all of its US offices. Seventy-six lawyers were named as "Leading Individuals" in 27 practice areas, more than ever previously ranked. Six practice areas were ranked in the No. 1 band including financial services regulation, intellectual property and life sciences on a national level, and bankruptcy/restructuring, intellectual property and real estate in Washington, DC. Antitrust was ranked in the No. 1 band nationally and in Washington, DC for the ninth consecutive year.


The National Law Journal Names Lawrence Schneider a 2010 "Champion" in Washington, DC

The National Law Journal named Lawrence Schneider to its list of "Champions & Visionaries" in its June 7, 2010 issue. Mr. Schneider was recognized as a "Champion" for his passion and commitment to pro bono immigration work for more than 20 years. He is one of ten Champions who have "upheld the profession's core values through public service, pro bono efforts and advocacy for civil liberties." The publication highlighted Mr. Schneider's leadership of the impressive report by Arnold & Porter on the nation's immigration removal adjudication system on behalf of the American Bar Association's Commission on Immigration.


Suzanne Wilson Named One of the "Top Women Litigators" in California 2010

The Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journal named Suzanne Wilson to its annual list of "Top Women Litigators" in California in its May 12, 2010 issue. This list features lawyers who are working on cutting-edge cases and have had significant impact on their places of employment, the legal community, or the larger society. Daily Journal highlighted Ms. Wilson's impressive history of representing such clients as Microsoft Corp. and VeriSign in IP matters. The publication noted her recent success winning a summary judgment for Microsoft in an intricate technology and advertising dispute.


The Lawyer Awards: 2010 Shortlist for "Competition/Regulatory Team of the Year"

Arnold & Porter is one of the firms named to The Lawyer's shortlist for "Competition/Regulatory Team of the Year." The winner will be announced at The Lawyer's annual Awards Ceremony in London on June 22nd. The team, led by London partners Tim Frazer and Susan Hinchliffe, was nominated for its success in securing EC Commission clearance of Kraft Food's £12 billion hostile bid for Cadbury, which created the world's largest confectionery company.


Robert Pitofsky Received the Justice Department's 2010 John Sherman Award

Attorney General Eric Holder presented Arnold & Porter counsel Robert Pitofsky with the Justice Department's 2010 John Sherman Award for his lifetime contributions to the teaching and enforcement of antitrust law and the development of antitrust policy. The department's highest antitrust award was presented to Mr. Pitofsky, a professor, on April 20, 2010 in the Great Hall of the Robert F. Kennedy Department of Justice building. Members of the judiciary, officials of several federal agencies and members of the antitrust bar attended the award ceremony.


Suzanne Wilson and Ginger Dreger Named Leading IP Lawyers in California, 2010

Daily Journal named Suzanne Wilson and Ginger Dreger to its annual list of leading intellectual property lawyers in California in its April 7, 2010 issue. This list honors attorney achievements in the field of intellectual property. Ms. Wilson was named to the "75 Leading IP Litigators" list and was noted for her work representing a variety of industries in the technology space. Ms. Dreger was named to the top "25 Portfolio Managers, Prosecutors and License Specialists" list and was highlighted for advising biotech, medical device and pharmaceutical industries on domestic and international patent matters.


The National Law Journal's "Appellate Hot List" 2010

Arnold & Porter was named to The National Law Journal's "Appellate Hot List" in its April 5, 2010 issue. Arnold & Porter was one of only three firms profiled in the "Focus on Strategies" section and was one of 20 firms ranked on the nationwide list. Ranked firms "represent the best in the practice of appellate law" and "boast an impressive track record overall." The National Law Journal wrote a feature story on Arnold & Porter's banking pre-emption work, highlighted Supreme Court veteran Lisa Blatt's arrival as head of the firm's appellate and Supreme Court practice and described the noteworthy Israel immunity cases and the Troy Anthony Davis death penalty case.


Influence 50 Revenue Report 2009

Arnold & Porter ranked in the top 20 on the Influence 50 Revenue Report, which ranks the top lobby shops and law firms in the Washington, DC area in 2009. The report was published in the April 5, 2010 edition of The National Law Journal/Legal Times.


William Baer Named One of "The Decade's Most Influential Lawyers" 2010

The National Law Journal named Arnold & Porter partner William Baer to its list of "The Decade's Most Influential Lawyers" in its March 29, 2010 issue. He is one of only three honorees ranked in the antitrust category. The National Law Journal selected 40 attorneys nationwide whose work throughout the last decade (2000-2009) "was so consequential that it helped push the profession, an industry or a practice area substantially forward." The National Law Journal noted Mr. Baer's experience representing General Electric Co., Visa Inc., Cisco Systems Inc., Micron Technology, and Pfizer Inc.


Arnold & Porter listed in Global Arbitration Review's "GAR 100" 2010

Arnold & Porter appears once again in the most recent edition (2010) of the Global Arbitration Review's "GAR 100," which profiles the world's top international arbitration law firms. The firm ranked in the top 10 worldwide in number of treaty-based arbitrations. GAR reported that, as of Sept. 1, 2009, the firm had 18 pending cases and a US$5.51 billion combined value of all pending arbitrations as counsel. GAR listed 13 Arnold & Porter attorneys as "names to know".


Chambers Global 2010

Eighteen Arnold & Porter attorneys were ranked as "Leading Individuals" in ten practice areas by Chambers Global 2010. The firm was ranked in the No. 1 band for life sciences globally and in the No. 1 band for competition/antitrust in the United States. Global Competition Review's 2010 "GCR Global Elite"

Arnold & Porter was ranked No. 6 in Global Competition Review's "GCR Global Elite" 2010, a ranking of the world's top 20 antitrust practices. The ranking is based on the size of a firm's competition practice, the number of nominees to The International Who's Who of Competition Lawyers, the stability of the practice, and the number of votes it received from rival firms. GCR wrote, "Arnold & Porter is cited as the leading antitrust practice in Washington, DC by many of its rivals." Arnold & Porter is also recommended by GCR in Brussels and was named an "Elite" firm for United States: Governmental Antitrust.


Arnold & Porter Ranked No. 1 in UK for Diversity

Arnold & Porter (UK) LLP was ranked the No. 1 international firm in the 2009 Diversity League Table of the Black Solicitors Network (UK). The firm also ranked in the top ten for female partners, ethnic minority paralegals, female paralegals, and diversity among 49 firms ranked.


Washingtonian's "Top Lawyers" 2009

In its December 2009 edition, Washingtonian magazine published a list of the area's "top 1 percent" of lawyers in its "Washington's Top Lawyers" list. This list included 24 Arnold & Porter attorneys from 15 practice areas.


Four Arnold & Porter Attorneys Named "Lawyers of the Year" for 2010 by Best Lawyers

In its 2010 list, Best Lawyers named William Baer the "Washington, DC Antitrust Lawyer of the Year"; Michael Bernstein the "Washington, DC Bankruptcy and Creditor-Debtor Rights Lawyer of the Year"; Michael Gerrard the "New York Environmental Lawyer of the Year" and John D. Arnold & Porter's Brussels office was ranked as "recommended" by The Legal 500 2009: Europe, Middle East & Africa for Competition and Legal Market. The Legal 500 EMEA wrote, "Arnold & Porter's clients appreciated 'team players who accomplish our needs' and 'gather the expertise needed to meet deadlines and to address issues'...Marleen Van Kerckhove was seen as 'one of the best lawyers in town' and her colleagues 'rightly enjoy good reputations, handle their cases well'."

In its 2010 edition, Chambers Latin America has ranked Arnold & Porter as a leading law firm for International Arbitration, noting the following: "This well-regarded team's most valuable assets are its linguistic skills, its subsequent capacity to work in several jurisdictions, and its extraordinary level of customer service. The International Who's Who of Environment Lawyers 2009

The International Who's Who of Environment Lawyers 2009 named firm Chair Thomas Milch and senior counsel Michael Gerrard on its "Most Highly Regarded Individuals - Global" list. Arnold & Porter was the only firm to have two individuals ranked on the list of ten international lawyers. Partners Blake Biles, Joel Gross, Jonathan Martel, Karen Nardi, and Trenton Norris were also ranked by Who's Who Legal 2009 for Environment.


The UK Legal 500 2009

Arnold & Porter's London office was ranked as "recommended" by The UK Legal 500 2009 in the following practice areas: corporate and commercial (EU and competition, M&A: lower mid-market deals, and venture capital); finance (debt capital markets); insurance (product liability defendant); public sector (administrative and public law); technology, media, and telecoms (brand management, IT and telecoms, intellectual property, media and entertainment, and pharmaceuticals and biotechnology); and transport (rail). Arnold & Porter had the most finalists and winners of any law firm in Washington Business Journal's "Top Washington Lawyers" feature, published in its September 18-24, 2009 edition. Gaela Gehring Flores was selected as a "Young Gun"; Sarah Kahn was named a winner for Corporate M&A; David Gersch was a finalist for Corporate Litigation; Steve Parker was named a winner for Technology Transactions; Amy Rifkind was named as a winner for Real Estate Transactions; and Les Sotsky was named a winner for Environmental Law. Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms 2010

Arnold & Porter was ranked in the top 20 of the Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms. The firm was ranked nationally No. 1 in antitrust for the seventh consecutive year. Arnold & Porter was ranked in the top five for products liability; in the top 20 for litigation; in the top ten for Washington, DC firms and in the top 20 for Southern California firms. The firm also received a top ten ranking for "Best Law Firms for Diversity."


Brian Condon Named President of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation

The Los Angeles County Bar Foundation has named Brian Condon as President, effective for the 2009-2010 year. Mr. Condon, a partner in Arnold & Porter’s Los Angeles office, has been on the Foundation’s board for the past ten years. The Los Angeles County Bar Foundation is the charitable arm of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, which funds pro bono legal service providers in Southern California.


American Lawyer's "Arbitration Scorecard" 2009

American Lawyer's "Arbitration Scorecard 2009" ranked Arnold & Porter among the top ten law firms of the world in the category "Top Firms Appearing As Arbitration Counsel". The firm was also one of the top five law firms in the world for number of treaty-based arbitrations listed in the "Arbitration Scorecard: Treaties" feature. The Arnold & Porter treaty-based arbitrations listed in the Scorecard involve claims totaling over US$4 billion.


Global Competition Review's "Women in Antitrust" 2009

Deborah Feinstein (DC), Annette Schild (Brussels) and Marleen Van Kerckhove (Brussels) were featured in Global Competition Review's "Women in Antitrust" 2009 feature. GCR interviewed and featured 100 female competition specialists in numerous organizations worldwide for the feature.


David Orta Named to The National Law Journal's "40 Under 40: Washington's Rising Stars" List 2009

The National Law Journal selected David Orta as one of the top 40 lawyers under 40 in Washington, D.C. when it placed him in its "40 Under 40: Washington's Rising Stars" feature in its July 13, 2009 edition. The National Law Journal predicted, "The young Washington-area lawyers profiled here will play a major role in the legal community of the nation's capital - and therefore of the nation - for years to come. Selected by the editors based on nominations and reporting, these 40 individuals have already made their marks in private practice…" Mr. Orta was singled out for his international arbitration practice and pro bono work. He represents clients such as the republics of El Salvador, Guatemala and Panama in complex, multimillion-dollar international arbitration disputes and has handled impact civil rights immigration cases pro bono for many immigrants.

Arnold & Porter ranked No. 6 in American Lawyer's "A-List" 2009, the magazine's annual ranking of the top 20 US firms. The magazine considers the list "a ranking of the nation's elite-the law firms that are best at balancing a thriving business with their obligations to the profession." It is the sixth time the firm has made the list since its inception in 2003. The "A-List" is based on revenue per lawyer, commitment to pro bono, diversity among lawyers, and associate satisfaction. Arnold & Porter also ranked No. 3 in the country in American Lawyer's 2009 pro bono survey.


Fred Fucci Named Chair of New York City Bar Association's Energy Committee

The New York City Bar Association's (NYCBA) has named Frederick R. Fucci as Chair of the Energy Committee, effective September 1, 2009, for a three-year term. Chairs are appointed by the President of NYCBA and lead the Committee in shaping NYCBA positions and framing debate on legal questions relating to energy law and policy. Mr. Fucci has been an active member of the NYCBA and a member of its Energy Committee for the past three years.


Northern California Super Lawyers 2009

The following Arnold & Porter attorneys from the firm's San Francisco office were named to the Northern California Super Lawyers 2009 list: Angel Garganta (business litigation, civil litigation defense, and banking), Karen Nardi (environmental), Trenton Norris (consumer law, intellectual property litigation, and environmental), and Beth Parker (intellectual property litigation, civil rights/first amendment, and alternative dispute resolution). Rachel Chanin was named to the Northern California Rising Stars 2009 list for business litigation and intellectual property litigation. This represents two-thirds of the partners and one-third of all attorneys in the San Francisco office. The annual Super Lawyers list selects five percent of the total lawyers in the state based upon peer review and the publication's independent research.

The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers 2009 named Ian Dodds-Smith "Life Sciences Lawyer of the Year" in its annual Who's Who Legal Awards. These awards are based on recommendations from clients and peers. The publication described him as "the finest regulatory lawyer in Europe" and said, "Arnold & Porter LLP's presence among the leading firms in this sector is due in no small part to the outstanding performance of Ian Dodds-Smith." Additional life sciences lawyers ranked by Who's Who Legal are: Lincoln Tsang (London), Ellen Reisman (Los Angeles), Arthur Levine, David Marsh, and William Vodra (Washington, DC).

James Joseph Named to IRS's Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities

The Internal Revenue Service's Advisory Committee on Tax Exempt and Government Entities (ACT) named James Joseph as one of ten new members on May 22, 2009. Mr. Joseph will serve on the Exempt Organizations Project Team. ACT members are appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury and advise the IRS on operational policies and procedures. Mr. Joseph, a partner of Arnold & Porter and member of the Tax, Trusts and Estates Group, advises charities, colleges and universities, private foundations, and advocacy groups on a variety of issues including operating business ventures, international activities, grant making, lobbying and advocacy, nonprofit governance, and executive compensation.


Practical Law Company's IP in Business Transactions Handbook 2009/10

Arnold & Porter was recommended in England for IP: commercial IP and IP: non-patent litigation; was recommended in Washington, DC for IP; and was recognized in England for IP: patent litigation. Arnold & Porter Ranked on Legal Business's Global London Survey 2009

Legal Business posed the question in its 2009 Global London survey analysis: “Is Arnold & Porter the most successful US firm in London?” after the firm was ranked No. 8 out of 58 Global London firms based on an aggregate of Legal 500 rankings. Legal Business pointed out, “Relative to its size in London, there is no other US firm (perhaps no other firm at all) that has as many rankings in the current edition of The UK Legal 500.” Arnold & Porter has more than one ranking for every three of its London lawyers and a top-tier ranking for every 14 lawyers. In Legal Business’s Global London survey, the firm was ranked among the top 50 US firms in London (based on revenue) and ranked No. 6 for most lateral partner hires by global firms in London since January 2008.


Ronald Johnston Named One of the Top "75 Leading IP Litigators in California" 2009

Los Angeles Daily Journal named Ronald Johnston to its "75 Leading IP Litigators in California" list in its April 8, 2009 issue. He was recognized for his work handling a variety of copyright cases last year, including a decision about whether copyright protection exists for computer languages; and for his representation of Verisign Inc. in a dispute over its right to be the exclusive operator of .com and .net Internet registries.

Kevin Lavin named a "Leading Lawyer in Dealmaking" 2006

Legal Times named Kevin Lavin one of Washington’s “Leading Lawyers in Dealmaking” in its June 19, 2006 issue. The article notes his work on the $1.5 billion merger of US Airways with America West and the $858 million sale of American Management Systems to CGI and CACI. The article quotes Elizabeth Blake, former general counsel of US Airways, on the company's merger: "It was an immensely complex series of transactions....we literally couldn’t have done it without Kevin."
