Overview

Our Brussels office, established in 2003, is home to our European competition/antitrust and regulatory practices-both historical strengths of Arnold & Porter LLP. Centered in the hub of European regulatory policy-making, our Brussels team advises clients from around the world on an array of EU and cross-border competition and regulatory matters.

Our attorneys in Brussels are recognized and respected for their work. Chambers Global 2009 wrote that the firm “excels at giving practical advice and understanding the client’s business; and it is also well suited to work on a global scale, with an impressive US and European operation.” Head of the firm’s European competition practice, Marleen Van Kerckhove was singled-out for her “great communication skills” while Luc Gyselen was described as “client-focused and down-to-earth.”

In the field of competition law, we structure and obtain clearance for corporate transactions; we advise on application of the law to agreements, conduct, and corporate strategies; we offer tailor-made competition compliance training and auditing; and we represent clients before EC and national competition authorities, as well as in European and national courts. Our experience with European law also includes free movement of goods, technical standards, chemical regulation, and general consumer protection issues. We represent clients from a broad array of industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, tobacco, energy, transport, media and communications, IT, consumer electronics, and automotive and general manufacturing. Combining our antitrust experience with the sector-specific experience of our US and London colleagues, we regularly advise on the intersection of antitrust and sector-specific regulation in pharmaceuticals, food, financial services, and communications.

Arnold & Porter's Competition Law Forum is an informal and non-exclusive network of carefully selected antitrust specialists from 39 countries, including the 27 EU Member States as well as major industrialised nations around the world. Picked for their in-depth experience, client-friendliness, and local connection, they are available to assist Arnold & Porter's clients in multi-jurisdictional merger filings and in local and EU cartel dawn raids in their jurisdiction, as well as to advise on other aspects of local antitrust practice. Members of the Forum meet once a year in Belgium to discuss recent developments in the area of competition law.
